Join us for our monthly dinner featuring the flavors of Sonora and Oaxaca from chef David Matias, formerly of Teresa’s Mosaic Café. Now Chef David is expanding his family’s reach, bringing these flavors to the north side of Tucson at Victoria Cocina Mexicana. For more than 20 years, Matias worked alongside his parents, Teresa and Alfonso, at Teresa’s Mosaic Cafe, serving both Sonoran and Oaxacan cuisine.  “It’s time to venture out and bring more of my roots to Tucson,” said Matias, a Culinary Institute of America graduate. Victoria Cocina Mexicana is his “translation to bringing more of his Oaxacan dishes forefront and featuring ingredients such as mole, nopales, flor de calabaza, and native chiles to his menu. 

“We’re trying to stay true to our Oaxacan region, where we don’t have flour tortillas … and we serve only white rice and black beans,” explained the 47-year-old father of four. “Oaxacan flavors are more earthy and there’s also a lot of layers and components. We’re making sure that the chiles and the spices are not just in the dishes but are very present in them. You can taste something and say, ‘Oh, I don’t know what that is, but I can taste it and I like it.’” Matias’ scratch menu also dips into the French influences from his CIA training.  Matias says “I am a Oaxacan man who was brought up cooking Sonoran food with my parents at their successful restaurant, but they sent me to a French culinary school, and now I’m back and I’m putting all those things together. I’m trying to present Tucson something a little different.”

Victoria Cocina Mexicana is located at 7090 N. Oracle Road in La Toscana Village (SE corner of Oracle and Ina).
Attendance is limited to 30 persons. Reservations will be closed at 5:30pm, Wednesday July 9^th.
