X Chapter Relay

The “X” Chapter is a non-geographical Chapter of BMW CCA, and it is celebrating 25 years of the X model of BMW this year by traversing all four regions of BMW CCA Chapters in the USA. They’re asking each Chapter to participate.

We’ve agreed we will meet The Roadrunner (Phoenix area) Chapter in Globe, Arizona on September 21^st for a nice lunch at “The Copper Bistro” on Hwy 60. There we will accept an ‘X bundle’ that has been transported through parts of the Pacific Zone and then we can hand it off to The New Mexico Chapter the next day. And that hand-off is planned for near the“Very Large Array (VLA)” https://public.nrao.edu/visit/very-large-array/, where we can tour that New Mexico facility with New Mexico Chapter representatives.  Afterwards we’ll have a nice lunch in Magdalena, New Mexico at the well-reviewed “Tumbleweeds Diner” https://www.tumbleweedsnm.com/.

The route to Globe is via AZ Hwy 77, and then we are traveling through the Salt River Canyon to the Show Low, Pinetop, Lakeside area and resting overnight near Greer, Arizona. From Greer, it’s about a two hour drive to the Very Large Array. And the VLA is about two hours from Albuquerque, or else about six hours from Tucson, Arizona.

First Day (Single Day) Drive: Our Drive Tour to Globe, Arizona is scheduled for Saturday, September 21^st , with a 9am meetup at  The Hilton El Conquistador on Oracle. Then we drive to meet the Roadrunner Chapter at “The Copper Bistro” around 11am, when the eatery opens. From there, it’s a leisurely drive to the White Mountains, or else back to Tucson.

Second Day (Weekend): For those continuing beyond the White Mountains to New Mexico, the Drive Tour the next morning, Sunday September 22^nd, begins with an early start (we must be on the road by 8am, since New Mexico is on MDT & we ‘lose an hour’ crossing the border). We then meet up with The New Mexico Chapter around 11am at the Very Large Array.  Lunch afterwards is in Magdalena, New Mexico at Tumbleweeds Diner.
